Phuket island lies just off the southwest coast of Thailand, and is connected to the mainland by bridge. This is the place to go to for utter relaxation. Don’t expect to find any culture here, or a multitude of amazing shops and restaurants. They exist, but tend to be few and far between. Check out our Insider Guide to Phuket for recommendations. What Phuket does have in abundance, however, is beautiful beaches. Some are overridden with hotels and tourists, but if you do your research, there are some absolutely spectacular stretches of sand, and the clearest of seas beyond. On most of the beaches, you can find simple ‘shacks’ serving up good local cuisine and the prices are very reasonable. For a taste of Phuket’s ‘interesting’ bar scene, tourists head to Patong. We don’t recommend it for anything other than shock value however!
