There is an otherworldly element to Tasmania, a remote island off the Melbourne coast. Its gothic landscape of brooding mountains and rainclouds contrasts with the perfect white sand beaches and lichen-splashed granite of the east coast. It’s a place of remarkable natural beauty and one of the most pristine environments in the world, with an abundance of fascinating wildlife, incredible scenery and reputedly the cleanest air on the planet. Tasmania is also gaining a reputation for its creative scene, both on the food and wine side but also for its ever expanding lineup of festivals and world-renowned art museum, the MONA. It’s worth spending a bit of time here to fully experience the destination, and it’s certainly worth hiring a car and exploring as much of the island as possible at a leisurely pace.
