Taupo was created nearly two thousand years ago by a volcanic eruption so big it darkened the skies in Europe and China. Evidence of the lake’s fiery birth will become apparent during a visit to the steaming craters, bubbling rock pools and geysers at the Craters of the Moon. The lake itself is a fantastic destination for water-skiing, sailing and kayaking. The rock carvings at Mine Bay, which can only be seen from the water, make for a great boat trip of kayaking excursion. The forests surrounding the lake are beautiful, and perfectly set up for hiking and mountain biking for all levels of experience. The area is perhaps best known for fishing however. The town of Turangi has the largest natural trout fishery in the world, and this is the place to cast a line and hope to catch a whopper! Just north of Taupo is New Zealand’s most visited attraction, the magnificent Huka Falls, where more than 220,000 litres of water thunder over the cliff face every second. Situated on a simply breathtaking spot just moments from the falls, lies incredibly beautiful Huka Lodge. More on this spectacular property in the Properties section of the website.
