Restaurants - On the Ski Slopes

Idéal 1850

Lunch

If it is a sunny day, this is the place to go. The outdoor terrace here has a view that will blow your mind. Diners are offered cowboy hats to shield the sun from their eyes, and add that extra edge to your ski wear! The menu is short and concise, but moreish - try the burger, it’s a stunner. Inside there is a raging fire, on which most of the meat is cooked, as well as a cozy dining area perfect for bad weather days.

La Fruitière

Lunch

A visually beautiful restaurant, decorated in white and blue with ‘to die for’ views. Book a table at 2pm on a sunny day and settle in for the rest of the afternoon. The food and service are not the best you will find on the mountain, but the après scene is the best here. Right next door is La Folie Douce, and outside at one of the tables of La Fruitière you are right in or the action, in a slightly more civilised environment.

Summit of the Mont Joux Ski Lift I +33 (0)4 50 58 99 67 I Open daily during the ski season from 12:00pm - 3:00pm

Chalet Le Forestier

Lunch

The three Michelin starred chef Emmanuel Renaut of Flocons de Sel fame opened his restaurant on the pistes in 2017 in an authentic Savoyard farm that is only accessible on skis. The farm once provided refuge to forest wardens amongst others, and Renaut has taken inspiration from the chalet’s story and developed a thoroughly authentic menu, taking advantage of the freshest ingredients sourced from the local area. The result is a simple yet utterly sensationally executed menu which will warm both bellies and hearts. We love the friendly welcome here and down-to-earth nature of the place. Makes a welcome change from some of the more pretentious slope-side restaurants!

Super Megeve

Lunch

Super Megeve is located just at the top of the Rochebrune cable car so it’s an easy option for non-skiers to get to. The restaurant inside is nice enough, but the outside is pretty sensational on a sunny day, with fantastic views and the scent of grilled meat cooking on the huge barbecue at the restaurant’s entrance. The restaurant is known for its barbecued meats, and we can vouch for this. Linger here for a long lunch (it is bound to be as service here is notoriously slow) and then take a coffee on one of the deckchairs and marvel at the view for a bit longer. Also open during the summer.

Arrivée du Téléphérique de Rochebrune I +33 (0)4 50212205 I Open during the winter season and in Juke and August daily from 12:00-15:00pm

L'Alpette

Breakfast / Lunch

L’Alpette is a beautiful looking chalet restaurant at the top of the Alpette chair lift on the Rochebrune side of town. It has a classic mountain menu at lunch time, but we recommend coming here for their breakfast, which is served from 9am. Take a pew on one of the tables on the terrace, order an omelette or basket of pastries, and take in the stunning views with the rising sun in the background. This is one of the best and only options for breakfast on the slopes. Also open during the summer.

Le Refuge

Lunch and Dinner

A ten minute drive from the centre of town, and one of our favourite restaurants in Megeve for dinner. The atmosphere is cozy yet buzzing, and the menu is divine. The rack of lamb is delicious and the gratin side dishes are to die for.

Restaurant La Ferme

Dinner

This is a very simple restaurant in nearby Combloux, specialising in, guess what? Cheese. In particular, they do a phenomenal ‘fondue au trois herbes’. This is honestly the best fondue I have ever had - made so much more interesting with the addition of the herbes, and best accompanied by a glass of chilled local white wine to help digest the meal. It’s a 10 minute drive from Megève centre and as it is so tiny, with only 5 tables, reservations are essential. Best of all, this is one of the best value restaurants in the area.

62, Chemin de la Promenade, 74920, Combloux / +33 (0)4 50 93 11 81 / Open daily for dinner from 7:00pm and Tue - Sun for lunch from 12:00pm - 2:00pm

Flocons de Sel

Lunch and dinner

I sadly haven’t yet made the pilgrimage to this impeccably reputed three Michelin starred restaurant as the accompanying price tag puts it firmly in the category of ‘saving for a special occasion’. For food afficionados however, Flacons de Sel should place at the top of your priority list, just be prepared to swallow hard and accept the cost for what is widely known as one of the best meals in the whole of the Alps.

Domaine de la Sasse

Dinner

A completely unique dining experience awaits at Domaine de la Sasse. After a 30 minute brisk walk from the nearest parking spot, diners arrive at Domaine de Sasse, where Eric Meridol breeds his herd of formidable bisons. Upon entering the farm, diners are offered plush slippers to slip on as well as a glass of champagne, and the bison feast begins. Eric works his magic on every dish of the ten course tasting menu, and bison is the star of every dish (with the exception of dessert). The Domaine opens up to diners only a few times a year (mainly during the summer months), so reservations are imperative. Private bookings require a minimum of 6 people. Payment in cash only.

La Chocolaterie

Afternoon Tea

The newly opened Grand Hôtel Soleil D’Or is an absolute beauty. It has been decorated with exquisite style and an immense amount of thought has gone into its food and beverage offerings. La Chocolaterie is an informal tea room specialising in the most divine made to order hot chocolate as well as the most sensational selection of cakes, biscuits and truffles, beautifully displayed on a huge farmhouse table. Visit any time of the day for a sweet treat and settle in on one of the cozy sofas by the fire.

Bars and Nightlife

La Folie Douce

Après Ski

The infamous Folie Douce is everything you imagine it to be. From around 2:30pm, the DJ cranks the music up, dancers come out and the Euro trash climb up on the tables in their ski boots and let loose. It’s brilliant fun, just don’t forget to hot foot it out of there by 4:30pm or you might never get off the mountain!

Domaine Le Coulairon

Visit a Reindeer Farm

This is a fantastic activity for families travelling with younger children. We did this for a friend’s Birthday and it was really lovely. We arrived at the farm and were taken on a tour of the reindeer and sheep, which are all very friendly and not adverse to receiving a bit of attention. Then we were taken to their cozy Finnish ‘Kota’ for hot chocolatee and a snack. It is possible to book just the tour (no snack) which will last an hour, or even a full on meal instead of a snack (3 hrs). Reservations should be made online through their website.
